Common Questions About Our Cycling Routes

Everything you need to know about cycling the Waterford Suir Valley heritage rail route and our guided experiences for active adults

Absolutely — the converted rail path is completely flat with no traffic, making it ideal for getting back into cycling. We offer structured confidence-building sessions specifically for adults returning to cycling, and most participants build comfort within 2-3 sessions. Our guides work at your pace, not anyone else's.

The route is approximately 18 miles one-way, but you don't have to do the full distance. We regularly stop at heritage points, historic viaduct sections, and local landmarks. Most of our guided tours cover 8-12 miles with plenty of breaks for photos, conversation, and rest.

Any comfortable, well-maintained bike works — hybrid, road, or mountain bikes all suit the flat terrain. We don't currently offer bike hire, but we can recommend local shops in Waterford that do. If you're unsure whether your bike is ready, check out our guide on choosing the right bike for flat routes .

Yes — our guided tours include stops at facilities in Waterford and Piltown, plus we carry water and know rest spots along the viaduct sections. We always brief participants on facilities at the start, and our guides carry first-aid kits and emergency supplies.

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer ideal conditions — mild temperatures and dry paths. Summer's great too, though it can get warm on longer rides. For more detail on weather and seasonal tips, read our guide to the best times to cycle the Suir Valley .

We run regular social group rides where you'll meet other active adults with similar interests — it's a great way to connect and enjoy the heritage storytelling together. We also offer private guided tours for groups of 4 or more. Get in touch with us to discuss what suits you best.
